Week 1 of the 2023 NFL Preseason begins tonight with a pair of matchups, including the Houston Texans vs. New England Patriots. No matter which team you believe will come out on top, the BetMGM bonus code TOPACTION is perfect for new customers looking to make their first bet.

BetMGM Sportsbook offers new users a $1,000 first bet on the house. Bettors can wager up to $1,000 for their first bet, and if it loses, BetMGM matches that amount and refunds you in bonus bets. Make sure you deposit at least $10 and use the bonus code TOPACTION to claim this offer.

While this offer is available on any sporting event at BetMGM, it's not offered in every legal state. BetMGM users in New York and Washington D.C. won't have access to this promo.

The Texans and Patriots begin their preseason slate tonight at 7 p.m. ET, with NFL Network broadcasting the game. Check out our breakdown of the matchup below.

BetMGM Bonus Bet: Texans-Patriots

Thursday night marks the first NFL action for No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud. Stroud had an impressive two-year career at Ohio State, passing for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns. However, it shouldn't take him long to realize it won't be as favorable an experience with the Texans.

New England isn't expected to play many starters, as their offensive line is dealing with many injuries. Bettors shouldn't expect to see Mac Jones, Rhamondre Stevenson, or JuJu Smith-Schuster. Even backup QB Bailey Zapee may not see much playing time.

Stroud will start the game for the Texans, but it shouldn't be long before we see Davis Mills on the field. Mills is an experienced NFL quarterback, which likely factors into BetMGM giving the Texans a 3.5-point advantage in this matchup. The over/under is set at 36.5 points.

Action Network's Chris Raybon is all over the under, citing injuries, a kicker battle, and weather concerns. However, his Texans vs. Patriots game pick revolves around the first-half point total.

With the full-game total having been bet down to 36.5 at most books, it's sitting right around the key number of 37.

Also, the game may have more dangerous finishers at the quarterback position: Houston will likely close with Case Keenum, who is still good enough to be a QB2 on many teams, and the Patriots could give a look to speedy dual-threat rookie Malik Cunningham.

It is also worth noting that Bill Belichick-coached teams are 43-19-2 (69%) toward the second-half over in the preseason dating back to 2005, making him the most profitable preseason second-half over coach in our entire Action Labs database.

The Pick: 1H Under 19.5 | Bet to 19

BetMGM offers the first-half point total at 19.5 (-115). That's a good number for your first bet, but that doesn't work for a bonus bet. There's nothing that says you can't take a minus-money prop for your bonus bet, but it's not the optimal approach if you want to make money long-term.

Betting on underdogs is the best for bonus bets because it gives you more expected value. The key thing to note with bonus bets is you never keep your initial stake.

The Minnesota Vikings face the Seattle Seahawks in the nightcap for Thursday's preseason slate. Let's say we combine the Vikings +3.5 (-110) and first half under 19.5 (-115). Check out the outcome if we bet $100 on a parlay with +256 odds.

  • If the parlay hits, you'll receive $256 in winnings, but don't keep your $100 bonus bet
  • If the parlay loses, you walk away with nothing

BetMGM has a few things you should know before you get started.

  1. You must be 21+ years old to register and bet.
  2. You must be located in a BetMGM state when placing your first wager. You don’t have to live in Ohio to wager; you have to be in the state at the time of activation and making a bet. Check out our travel betting guide for more details. You can withdraw money once you’ve already left the state (so if you were in Ohio on Monday and bet on the Super Bowl, you could withdraw in your home state next Monday).
  3. You must have access to a valid deposit method. Credit cards, bank account transfers, and PayPal are the most popular, though some credit cards will flag gambling and not allow you to deposit.
